I have a unlocked Bold 9700 which i intend to put my Pay-as -you-go sim card in (no data plan) as i understand it i won't be able to use the built in browser to connect to my home network and or hot spots , if i download Opera mini to use a my default browser will this work OK if so what would be the settings on my phone ?

Using Opera Mini may very well work but you'll have to be careful about data charges which may get quite expensive.
