Default do i need a blackberry plan?

Please Login to Remove!

hi all,

i just purchased a BB 8320 - i can make calls / sms. But cant setup my email.

1.) Is this phone locked?
2.) Do i need to contact my service provider for a blackberry plan if i want to setup email on my BB?

This is just to clarify

You need a BB plan to set up your email. The second question is a carrier related question. RIM is experimenting with prepaid/paygo BB plans but for the most part worldwide its yes.

Your blackberry would still be a decent PIM and phone without the Data, however I would highly recommend you have a Data plan. It's just the right thing to do

Somehow I don't pay for data ( tmobile ), but I do have access to the net, my gmail, just not BB enabled Email. Maybe it's because I HAD a data plan, and cancelled it...?
Not that I'm complaining :D

i think in a matter of days, your free access to the net, will be over. i believe it just takes a couple of days for the transaction(your cancellation) to fully kick in.

Thank you for your answers. Reason i posted this was someone had bought a BB from me and was insisting the Phone was locked because he could not set up email. I advised him that he would need a blackberry plan but he didnt think so. I can now send him this link. Thanks guys

PS. I already have a BB plan with my 8320. Just had to clarify this for the buyer.

If the phone was locked then another carrier's SIM could not be used with the device. Just like any other GSM device out there. I guess you wouldn't be able to set up email but you wouldn't be able to place or receive calls either...

some providers just offer an 'email' only plan for $15 or so. I prefer the data plan myself as I use ViiGo and Nav4All as well as a few other web apps.

Though just as a phone with a keyboard and calendar, the Blackberry is an awesome all around device.

Yea T-Mobile has a email option for only 9.99 instead of the 19.99 for the BB data add on but for a extra 10 bucks you might as well get the internet

I think T-Mobile has $5.99 plan called T-zone and if I am not wrong then you can try that plan too. I am not so sure about it as one of my friend told me that he is using that plan and its working great on his BB. Just dont tell T-Mobile that you are using BB otherwise they will force to buy special plan. This is what I've heard as I am not using T-Mobile.
