I currently have a Pearl 8100 and love it. Had it since Dec 2006 when cingular rolled it out. I am eligible for an upgrade in early May. I am not going to rush to upgrade since my Pearl works like a champ. It's nicked up a little, but that's ok. When I am ready to upgrade, which one, 8110 or 8120? I am not near a lot of Wifi hotspots, so the 8120 may not do me any good, plus I am fine with EDGE data. I do a lot of browsing on the BB browser. Maybe it does not hurt to have WiFi? I may get more use out of GPS, so I am leaning towards the 8110. Is there any extra monthly charge to use the GPS function?

No, there is no difference. It can track your location, and it has directions (just will not audibly tell you when to turn etc). In all honesty the audible directions are kind of annoying after a while. I am not sure if the 8100 does this, but in google maps either way it can triangulate your location within around 1200 meters based on the cellphone towers (GPS will track you down to a couple meters, much more accurate).


In my opinion, go with the 8120 (I have one). The WiFi makes browsing faster, plus you can have GPS too . Well its not built in, but you can pick up a bluetooth GPS for cheap from

This is just one example, its small enough to fit on your keychain, and provides the SAME features as the 8110.

there is actually a huge difference. with GPS, your location is pinpointed to approx. 3 meters of acuracy, without it...google maps will use cellular triangulation to pinpoint your exact location which isn't all that great since acuracy will be in the range of 1500 - 5000 meters (from my experience with it).

I would actually suggest the OP getting the 8120 with wifi and a bluetooth GPS puck because this will give the user both GPS and wifi. why not have the best of both worlds

Heh, ive actually had a 8100, 8120, and i am currently using a 8110....

Just like the others have Said, GPS vs WIFI... i happen to enjoy the GPS more than wifi and dont want to carry around a GPS puck whereever i go (you never know when you need GPS)... so it works out great.

either way , if you browse the web alot youre going to LOVE the tiny upgrades they didnt with the browser...

I agree. The only time many people need GPS is when you are in the car, aka leave the puck in the car. It is a pain to carry it around, but the only plus is with the 8120, you can add GPS functions, with the 8110, you cant add WiFi. so you can have the option of both, or be stuck with GPS.
