Default BB free maps/gps

Please Login to Remove!

hey guys, I just got a BB pearl and started reading up on what i can do with it. just had a little idea and wanted to know if it was possible...

Now that we can have 4GB memory cards, do you think we will ba able to put maps on our BB and have a GPS without using a data plan or just not using any data connection (since every MB used is expensive with rogers and it would be much faster!)? I'm guessing that we didn't have this before since a Mapping software (for US and Canada) is over 1GB but now that we have 4GB we should be able to have a complete mapping app preloaded in our memory card. right?

let me know what you think!

So, how will you have GPS on your 8100 if you don't have a data plan or connection to connect with the REQUIRED satellites for the information of where the heck you are?

you would still need to have a gps receiver...that would give you your position.

I saw on a website that you can turn a laptop into a gps with only a gps receiver and and map application. no internet required. so i'm guessing this could also be done with a BB.

This is what I have thought when it comes to bbmaps. I know it downloads data as you go and appears to keep the information until you clear it, you can see this in the options menu.

What would be really cool is if you knew you were going to take a trip, you could download the map data to your berry. This way if you did not have coverage you would not be out of luck.

Just an idea.

actually buggle_96 that already exists for a computer. check out the software called "expertgps". maybe it can be saved to your BB instead of a hard drive. I'll try all these things when i get home tonight but i thing a software will have to be developed just for the BB.

humm... seems that my idea already exist for other phones/pda but not for the pearl or anyother BB. check out tomtom navigator 6. looks pretty cool...I wonder why they didn't make it to work with BB.

Doubtful, im sure it would take some programming. Not just bbmaps, but google, telenav. I think it would be a useful feature.

Verizon's gps deal works off their towers. It's fine for in the cities but when you get outside of their coverage area and on to roaming it's useless. I used to use a handheld Extrex legend, and microsoft streets and trips on my computer. Now I have the microsoft gps too though.
