Default Blackberry 8830+GPS+Verizon

Please Login to Remove!

Yes, I know there has already been beaucoup discussion on this forum about Verizon (my carrier) locking out the GPS function on the 8830. A pox on Verizon, but that still leaves me, a professional travel writer, without GPS function on my 8830.

Today, I saw that BBerry.com (and I'm sure many others) HAVE started offering GPS receivers compatable with the 8830. HOWEVER, none seem to have navigational (street and road mapping) software available for the 8830. Does anyone know if ANY 8830 compatible street mapping software is available (such as "CoPilot"). If so, what is the name of the program, and can you tell me where to get it.

Thanks in advance. Oh yes, any late breaking rumors about Verizon offering some sort of GPS function for the 8830???????????

Bluetooth GPS receivers have been available for the 8830 long before the 8830 even existed ;)

Pretty much any Bluetooth GPS receiver will work fine.
I use a Globalsat BT-359 and it works great.

BBMaps and Google Maps are both free GPS navigation apps.
I believe Telenav (subscription service) is also available for the 8830.

No official word from Verizon regarding the availability of VZnavigator for the 8830.

Default No Go on Telenav

I called Telenav, and they stated quite firmly that they do not yet support the 8830, or at least Verizon's version thereof.

I have Google Maps installed on my 8830, BUT this does not give me the point to point road navigation ability that I need, as, for instance, Telenav does.

So, again, I ask, is there any software out there for the 8830 that does what Telenav can do?????????????????

Thanks

Yes, it does.
It might not do it as elegantly as Telenav, but you do get turn-by-turn GPS navigation with Google Maps.
Same with BlackBerry Maps. (Personally, I like BBMaps better than Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation.)

This has been answered above.

Do you have a Bluetooth GPS receiver? You need one for the 8830. You can't use the internal GPS on the 8830 because it's been crippled by Verizon.

Default GPS Receiver

Thanks for clueing me in on Google and Blackberry Maps. I did not see a way in Google Maps to ask for GPS, point to point routing instructions, but perhaps you can clue me in as to how to invoke this function.

Yes, I have the Telenav GPS receiver I was using with my 8703e. I guess that will work with my new 8830. Any opinions on this???????

Thanks!

I believe the 8800 version of TeleNav will work on the 8830. And it *should* work with the BT-359.

What version of Google Maps do you have?
You need at least 1.5.1, but I'd recommend the most recent version 1.5.3

The Telenav GPS receiver should work fine with Google Maps.
I also agree with John Clark. While I haven't tried it, the 8800 version of Telenav should work fine on the 8830.

Default 8800 Version of Telenav

Can you please tell how to get the 8800 Version of TeleNav. On the Telenav site, it does not list the 8800 version on the Verizon page??????

Thanks!

Did you look under AT&T, since the 8800 is the GSM version
