Smile Pearl as Modem finally works

Please Login to Remove!

I have been trying unsuccessfully to use my pearl as a modem. Finally I called Cingular/AT&T and was given this http://tinyurl.com/23x9qg to go and download Cingular Communications Manager. Worked perfect the very first time. I am now a very happy camper since I spent my last camping trip trying to get it to work.

What data plan do you have? Is this an alternative to the horrendously expensive tethering option that AT&T has? I have the 29.99 unlimited plan- so I don't know if this will work for me. The terms of service agreement was a little confusing- so I wanted to clarify before I went ahead.

Ok- so I bit the bullet and installed the program. It recognizes my phone, but I get a PPP 718 error. I don't even know if I can call Cingy about this, because they haven't been what I would consider helpful with these matters in the past. Any ideas?

I have the 29.99 plan and did not have to do anything to get it to recognize my BB. this is the # I used for tech support 800-331-0500. The guy I talked to knew immediately what my problem was and was very nice.

Glad you enjoyed! My husband loves to call me his "tech qeek wife"! Mostly because I know how to work the remote and he doesn't. HA HA Oh well, if I couldn't teach him in 37 years, he can't gonna figure it out now.

I have the same 29.99 plan. Downloaded and installed Communications Manager, got 718 and 723 errors. Called support, they told me I need a seperate $59.99 tethered plan for that.

Oh well !!!!

WHEW!! You had me worried.
I logged on and checked my Cingular acct to make sure that wasn't added and I still have the same 29.99 plan and nothing else that I can see. SORRY!

Lots of people have been using the pearl as a modem. I used it as a modem a few months ago with my cingular bis plan and was never charged for the hundreds of mb of data usage. Do a quick search and you'll find tons of info.

i tried it and got the 700 something error too. plus it disconnected me from my wireless internet and i had to uninstall and restart to make it work. i really have no need to use my pearl as a modem right now but ill try it again when i have some time.

Got it working last night at around 3:30 AM !!!!

I am a Cingular / AT & T customer. This is what I did :

1. In Standard Modem / Properties /Advanced Tab / Extra Initialization commands, I added

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

Created my new modem connection using Standard Modem.

Gave DNS server address 66.209.10.201 and 66.209.10.202 .

Phone number *99***#

Unchecked "Use IP header compression" in TCP/IP / Properties / Advanced .

User name : [email address]
Password : CINGULAR1

I am getting 115.2 K connection.

BTW, I am not using Cingular Communications Manager. I did download and install it, didn't really work for me.

Of course, I had Desktop Manager running before I tried connecting as a modem, version v4.2 SP2 (English)

Default 8700c Woes

I've spent four hours reading through Mark's original guidelines and every other thread I could find on this site. I have an 8700c from Cingular about one and a half years ago. I've updated the firmware. I've rebooted my PC and the 8700c several times. I've tried Desktop Manager 4.1, 4.2 and the AT&T Communications Manager. I've tried every WAP and ISP string in the book, filled in user/password, blank user/password, etc. I've unchecked everything I could uncheck. The network connections options are burned into my brain.

I still cannot get past Error 720 after trying to connect.

I understand from various posts here and from Cingular that I need some ridiculously expensive tether plan, and yet I see all sorts of people here saying they can make it work with an 8700c.

If anyone has a working 8700c without a tethering plan, please let me know the settings you are using. I am really pulling my hair out here. You can even email me direct at [email address].

Thanks.

PS - Screw the iPhone...

Default Also error 718

Depending on what settings I fool around with, I also can get stuck on Error 718.

Five hours now wasted trying to get this to work.

Worked perfectly for an 8100 on Cingular (after several failed attempts using other instructions). Thanks.

Do you know whether the data usage from this connection is charged if you are on Cingular's Unlimited BB Plan (the $44.95/month plan)? Will I get charged for data from this connection, or is it included in the plan? Probably best to confirm in advance....

Mine used to work and now doesn't. I called Cingular to get help and the guy told me that some accounts have this ability on accident and they are going through and cleaning up mistakes. That's why mine worked and now doesn't without the 59.99 tethering option.

But I'm going to try again anyway.
