There is no WiFi on any current BB model.

There is one BB available which features WiFi, it is the 7270. None of the BB-Connect devices allows to use the BB feature with the Wifi interface.

Yeah the 7270 is a wifi only device. Basically a 7290 with a wifi chip instead of a gsm chip. You have to have an existing VOIP system in place to use voice services.

no, not wifi

just GPRS, has something to do with security and encryption or lack thereof on a WiFi network

My understanding is that your carrier basically creates a VPN stream back to Blackberry's central services which may then continue on to your BES server. There is no way to create that stream outside of your carrier. When you are roaming, a VPN is created back to your home network and then on to Blackberry.

As unlicensed mobile access (UMA) takes off (your mobile over wifi), I can see this happening. Your internet connection in that situation is essentially vpn'd to your mobile carrier and then restreamed to Blackberry. Holy latency!

I roam a lot and wish there was a way to do this over wifi, but I just don't see how to do it without your carrier taking active measures to open it up for that.
