Question Crosswords on the Pearl 8100

Please Login to Remove!

I've written a program for downloading and solving crosswords (New York Times, The Times, Guardian, Independent, Telegraph, Across Lite, etc.) for the BlackBerry. I've been told that the Pearl is significantly different from other BlackBerrys and was wondering whether anyone would be interested in testing it on the Pearl.

TIA

Karl.

You can download it at: karlisaac.com/xword/downloads/XWord.jar or do you need me to email/PM it to you?

Can you let me have any feedback -- good or bad

Thanks.

Hi,
I tried it, and can't get it to work. It downloads fine, and has the crossword icon, however when i tried to connect to dl a puzzle it says that it is unable to open file. It has the dropdown list as to what file type it is, then a url imput line. default as "www.bukarin.net/phil/puzzles/cryptic1.puz" Then there is are lines for user name and password. What should i be entering in these fields?

edit: went to your site and kinda got a better feel as to what i should be imputting in the fields. However, i tried some of the free puzzles, mainly thinks.com and bukarin, and the puzzles won't load using the urls for the across lite links. says "error - unable to open file". One time i got a java.null error, but i think it was due to me losing service momentarily

Hi the correct address is: bukharin.net/phil/puzzles/cryptic1.puz (an h in bukharin), but I guess that's just a typo in your message.

The site is a bit slower than normal today, but is working here. Do you have full data access to the Internet? Have you tried restarting your device and starting again?

Alternatively, the Guardian one should work "out of the box". The only site that requires a username and password is the NY Times, so don't enter anything in those boxes.

It may just be that the Pearl is just too different from the other BBs.

Thanks for the update ryangoo. Could you try the Guardian one for me?

Would be nice to narrow the problem down.

Is anyone else having problems getting it to download?

Hi ryangoo

The .pdb file. The default URL should take you to today's crossword. Ie, this one: roundpoint.com/live/online/guardiancw/egbtcm/pay/1.pdb

I just tried it in the emulator again and it worked.

Thanks.

Fritter

Thanks for that. Maybe it's a network provider issue. Could you tell me whom you are with?

Thanks

Thanks fritter. Do you normally do crosswords. What did you think of the program?

Hi Fritter. Did you have to do anything special to get an Internet connection suitable for downloading?

I have some others on T-Mobile who can't get it to work.

hi,
After tinkering some more, i havn't been able to dl any puzzles. I have the t-mo BIS data plan and all, with the same APN settings as fritter, with my default browser as internet. I've tried the links on the bukharin.net site, as well as the roundpoint site for the guardian .pdb file. i have taken the links directly out of both the bukharin.net site and the the roundpoint reg. email. it displays a progress bar with a 1 when attempting to download, and as soon as it turns to "2" it gives me the same error.

some other info:
OS v4.2.0.64

other third party software that uses data:
ramble IM
google talk, mail, maps

Ixxx8217;ve managed to download a couple from Across Lite (.puz) but when I press a letter on the keypad that same letter is not what is displayed on the crossword.
