Hello everyone. I have a BES Express server setup and need to add another device to the server. If I register that device with RIM and obtain another license for BES express, can I just use the CAL from that on my BES server?

I don't think you can, but I was wondering how the BES checks for appropriate # of CALs? If too many devices get on a BES server will it just stop allowing connections?

Without an open CAL you will not be able to register a new device to your existing BES Express. You could potentially run two concurrent instances of the BES Express application (having them run on different servers would probably make sense ...).

I imagine there is a simple algorithm built into the software to count the number of registered devices versus the number of registered CALs ...

Yup. If there are not free CALs you won't be able to register an new device.

How broke are you? BES device cal is only like $29! ;) I'm sure if you dig in that couch hard enough.... Besides, you got the BES Express for free.

Last I looked, it was $99 per if you buy by the single.

this is 100 percent false, going over your CAL limit will have no affect on the funtionality of BES and you will be able to add users, the only downside is that when you open blackberry manager it will tell you everytime that you are over your limit.

Not sure about this. Certainly in one setup I work with that has BES Express with one user, I was forced to re-add the user because of various problems with the BES install (which I won't go into). At one stage I accidentally attempted to add the user when they were already in BES Manager (albeit waiting for deletion) and the software refused quoting something about insufficient licenses.

when you go over your CAL limit it will give you the "error" that you are over the limit but it will still add the user and work fine, you just have to put up with the error everytime you open the blackberry manager

Not exactly...
You need to "put up with the error" until you go out and buy enough CALs to support the number of users. That would be the right way to handle it.

Cingular is giving away a BES Enterprise 4.1.x with 20 cals if you buy and activate 10 new Blackberry Devices on one order.
