Default Encoding video with proportionate height..?

Please Login to Remove!

So here is the question for an mencoder guru...

Is there an easy way to set mencoder to set a proportionate height for encoded video?

All the command line suggestion I have read on here set a specific width and height. This is problematic if you are encoding both letterboxed and 4:3 TV format content. If you use the letterbox ratio for 4:3 TV content it squishes video the down so everyone looks like they are 40 lbs heavier and if you use the 4:3 TV ratio for letterbox it stretches things out so it looks like an old kung fu movie....

Is there someway to tell mencoder that you want a width of 240 and just have the height be proportionate the the actual file size's height using whatever ratio the originals width is to 240? Or is this creeping into the territory of a small application that sits on top of mencoder that determines these things, passes along the variables to mencoder and encodes the video...?

Does mencoder support something like this? Is there an application that supports this? FFmpegX?

find out the width and height of the video you are encoding then use some simple math (cross multiplication) to find out what your corresponding encoding height should be.

Ahh.. yeah.. No.. I figured out that.. I guess I was hoping there was some way to save me the trouble and have mencoder set the height as a variable based upon the ratio of the source width:280...

Another option is to just have a text file with a 'widescreen' command line entry and a '4:3' version and just paste those into a terminal window -- but it would be much easier to just have mecoder do it..

Thought it couldn't hurt to ask and see if this was a possibility!
