First Look at TMO's @home for the 8800
Please Login to Remove!
I found this out on the web. It's a walkthrough for the TMO UMA service a.k.a. T-Mobile @Home

The 8800 will be the first to have WiFi and UMA on it. There is a BB with wifi, I believe it's the 7290 or something like that.

Does anyone know if the 8800 will definitely have WiFi?

Yes, it has been confirmed. One of the main selling points is going to be the WiFi with UMA.

Terrific! WiFi is a big part of my normal routine.
So it's an 8800 for me.
Now if I can only restrain myself to wait until the bugs are out of the first shipping units... ![Smile](http://www.blackberryforums.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

so the wifi on the 8800 will be automatic?
so if iam at home or in an office building "hotspot" ....
my phone, email and browser will work off hotspot or just email + browser functions?
i cant see the providers cutting into the billable phone minutes
will the phone be voip? no charge to your cellular account?

I don't believe the wifi will be automatic. I think you will have to access it before you use it if that makes sense. If you're at a hotspot I think there will be an icon perhaps that you click on to access the hotspot. I also don't think the phone will be voip.
I could be wrong though so take this all as my opinion I guess.

Where does this advertisement mention anything about BlackBerry or the 8800? I only see a Samsung phone on the website.

The original 802.11 only BlackBerry was the 7270. Same body as a 7290, but in a nifty olive green color.

Will there be any WIFI functionality if you don't purchase the ad-on like browsing the internet? Do you have to buy TMO's router to make the @Home WIFI calling work?

It is my understanding that it will work with any WIFI router. However, TMO will sell you a TMO branded D-Link router for easy setup.

What about if you don't buy the ad-on plan? Will you still be able to browse the internet or is this like the Internet without a BB data plan question?

Just noticed this discussion of WiFi on the phone..
I did a number of google searches, but none really define what this does.
The T-Mobile advert linked to by the first link says 'mobile and home phone',
but I don't think its clear..
So, let me ask
1. WiFi is just another wireless carrier signal.. instead of trying to locate and use the TMobile (insert carrier) cell tower, you use the short haul Wifi signal from home (or wherever you are standing). Shorter distance over the air..
aka, the number of cell tower connection points goes up to the number of wifi connection points.. (if I don't have wifi, but my neighbor does!?)
2. when you are at home, using your home router for the wifi signal, the phone also supports your home number..
so it must be 1. but whats with the marketing lingo 'unlimited calls' when at home.. sheesh I get unlimited calls now, nights and weekends (when I need em).
I 'assume' that this wifi setup supports the standard encryption types, my router has WPA turned on, and I've run into a couple devices that only support the older WEP, which I won't downgrade to..
