BES Upgrade v3.6 to v4.0

I've just been handed of upgrading our existing Blackberry server to v4.0.
We're running Blackberry server v3.6 on SQL 2000 for Exchange 2003. I've backed the database/handheld's but when I conducted the upgrade the existing database failed with no explaination in the log file.
Do I need to point my BES server to the backup database, delete the original BESmgmt database and then prompt the installation to 'create' a new database as opposed to 'migrate' with the same name then push it back?
