My blackberry storm 2 is refurbished ,and it keeps shutting itsself off???? is this just a bad phone or a virus?

Not a virus.

Does it shut off and stay off? Or does it turn off and reboot? And if the former, what do you do to start it?

Is there any pattern to when it shuts off?

Could be a bad phone, but more likely it's a bad battery. It could even be something as simple as the battery not making good contact with the leads. A paper shim along the side of the battery opposite the connectors can sometimes fix this issue.
