Default Unlocking a 7230 is simple

Today, just one day after recieving my blackberry, I thought it would be a good idea to unlock it. Just incase i go overseas, or switch providers (the more likely scenario) i'd like to still be able to use my BB.

I never thought it could be so easy.

I've been a tmo customer for 2 years (one started with voicestream, followed by no cell, followed by the one i'm currently in)

I've been fairly pleased with the service. Today, I called and said "I'm going to travel to the UK and i'd like to unlock my phone."

"deal!"

They verified my IMEI and sent it to someone else.

5 minutes ago i got an e-mail from t-mo with my unlock code.

I put it in, and now its unlocked!

I know their data service still has problems, but as far as this scenario, i'm happy with t-mo.

None of the Canadian carriers will unlock a device for less than a $250 fee. I have a 6280 that was never subsidized, and Rogers still won't give me the code. I own this phone outright, owe Rogers nothing, but if I want it unlocked... $250.

Which as far as I am concerned is total BS. The are hijacking my phone as far as I am concerned. I own it, I should be able to do whatever I wish with it.

These guys are really good with unlocking BB if your in the Toronto area: http://www.bongowireless.com/pages.php?pageid=16#11 I really don't agree with the Rogers Wireless unlocking tactics either especially when they have no issue with signing up folks who own an unlocked device?

Guys ... dump question ... I unlocked it from TMO support. How do you tell that it is unlocked. Is there a menu option that tells you??

I too spoke with Tmobile regarding our internation 7230. You are right, my blackberry works before I hung up the phone. Did the same with ATT, they will do it for free but will take up to 72 hours to work.

Find someone with an AT&T or cingular phone and stick their SIM into yours to see if it works. The other SIM don't have to come from a BlackBerry, as long as it is a working SIM on their phone. If your BB is unlocked, at least the phone part will work.

That isn't correct:

Go to Options > sim card and enter "alt-MEPD", that'll show an overview of the sim lock status. The "network" simlock must be disabled if it's going to accept third party cards.

Just tried it on my own 4.0 7230 and it works like a charm, it's been there since the very first 7230.

Once again: options > sim card. Then while holding down alt, type M E P D.

This is strange. I am also running 4.0, although this is the AT&T version of 4.0. Tmobile's 4.0 is not out yet.

I go to options > sim card. The screen now shows "SIM Card: Security Disabled". Then the ID and Phone number. With the highlight on the ID line, I hold down the <alt> key (I don't have a key specifically marked <alt> and I assume it is the key to the left of 'z') while keying in m e p d and nothing happened. I try holding down the <alt> key and <cap> key down while hitting m e p d and still nothing happened.

I know this BB is still locked. Does that make a difference? At the "About" screen, I show v4.0.0.171 (Platform 1.6.1.48)

Ahhh. That works. Thanks for the tip. You just help me verify my 7230 is still locked. Network says "Active".

Gentelmen: Anyone have problems assigning a 7230 on the Rogers network? A friend acquired a 7230 off ebay (it's a tri band GPRS model very similar to 7280 on Rogers) and Rogers people told him to go away basically..

it's unlocked too, he has voice service, but rogers won't give data service. Anyone have any advice for this user?
