I am having trouble with loading and keeping apps on my 7280 (OS4).

I loaded some appas OTA over the weekend. And tried them and they worked fine.

Today I got some apps to load using the Applicaiton Loader. This is all fine but when it goes through the process it says it finds apps on the handheld which are not registered or authorized and uninstalls them during the install process of the new app.

How can I avoid this...?

You probably have the .alx and .cod files installed in different places. So apploader won't recognize them each time you start it up. I install them in \Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files. I'm willing to bet if you don't install them there, you load them up just fine, but the next time you plug your bb in to install something else, it's not on the application list, if you manually add it back each time it will work also, but putting them in loader files will ensure they will be there the next time you install an app.

I think I am getting into territory of which I know very little (but am willing to learn). Is there a simple explanation of .cod, .alx, and .jar/.jad files.

All I know is that OTA I install .jad files. When I install via sync I think I have only installed .cod files. What is the purpose of the .alx files?

I checked my file directories and found the following:

- two directories under \Program Files\Common Files\RIM\Shared\Loader Files:
- 7200-v3.7.1.59_P1.6.1.48
- 7200-v4.0.0.171_P1.6.1.48
- under the 4.0.0.171 directory I have a list of .alx files
- under the \Java subdirectory to the above are all the .cod files
- none of the applications I have loaded (either OTA or via sync) are listed in any of these directories...

So what is supposed to be where?

.jad/.jar are the java application files used when doing OTA loads of programs. IE: Goto magmic games and download one of their games via your blackberry. Those are .jad and .jar files.

.alx files are kind of like configuration files for the .cod files. Those are used when you install them from apploader.

Based on your descriptions above, sounds like you have the original 3.7 files, and have upgraded to 4.0. Try copying the .alx and .cod files for the applications you regularly have loaded on your blackberry into the "Loader Files" directory (not any of the OS subdirectories, those are the only things in your loader files directory it seems). By doing this, it will almost always have those applications checked everytime you run apploader.

ok latest development - today I decided to load the themes (http://blackberryforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1576).

When I did so (following the instructions in that thread) it all worked fine except at the end of the Qizard it said Following Unidentified modules were found and will be removed: Berry411.

And it did just that.

So how do I stop losing Berry411 every time I use Application loaded? And why is this happening?

If you are a user under an enterprise BES server they may have it configured for something like this. however normally it just won't let you install them at all.

Put the Berry411 ALX and COD files in the Loader Files directory - leave them there (even after you install it). Do the same for any applications you load via ALX/COD. Application Loader *should* see these as it does the others, but if not, then load them manually (as you probably did anyhow) and leave the files there after it finishes installing the application(s).

As for descriptions...

ALX - as bfrye mentioned, its a configuration file. its basically an XML file that will let your Desktop Software know what COD to load, what to name the installation on the handheld, etc.

JAD / JAR - JAD file is a midlet configuration file for the JAR archive - it contains information such as the icon it displays for the application, its display name, and the JAR filename and file size (amongst other things). The JAR file is simply a Java archive file that has the innards of the Java-based application.

COD - A RIM proprietary compiled java application file based on the JAR/JAD.

Thats my understanding of them, atleast.
