Take a look at the attached image from my BES server and PLEASE assist me in understanding what I am looking at.

Doug G. had his BlackBerry account TERMINATED with his wireless provider when he switched to an iPhone back around the 5th of December. He had the phone number from the BlackBerry swapped to his new iPhone. He shut off the power to his BlackBerry, and put it in a night stand at home. Doug has verified that no other family member has been using it. Doug also stated that the BlackBerry device does NOT have wireless service to it at this time.

PLEASE help me understand HOW or WHAT is causing my BES to tell me that the 'Last Contact Time' is dated this morning.

Because, knottyrope, my users are not as good as your users.

I am SURE that all of YOUR users inform you of EVERYTHING they are going to do before they do it. I am SURE that YOUR users NEVER do ANYTHING without your knowledge. I am SURE that ALL of YOUR users inform you of when they are going to leave your BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

I check last contact time every week to see if users have an issue. Only takes a few clicks. Then I contact the user in question to see whats up.

You are correct knottyrope. "No need to get snippy" except for the fact that it allowed me to vent over what is becoming a frustrating problem. Thank you for granting me a forum where others understand the need to vent. (Much appreciated)

But do you see my problem? Doug's 'Last Contact Time' is up to date and quite valid. Doug's 'Last Contact Time' leads me to believe that there is NO PROBLEM whatsoever. BUT he has not used his BB since 5Dec09. So my main question is, WHAT does the 'Last Contact Time' field really tell me?

My perception of 'Last Contact Time' would be the last time that my BES was able to 'reach out and touch' the users BB device. This is NOT true because Doug's last contact time is TODAY!!!

Yes, knottyrope, that does tell me something... I have to put the BES data from two or three different fields together in order to get a clear picture of a users status.

BUT... The question is "What does the 'Last Contact Time' field indicate"? What is the BES contacting in order to populate that field with a time stamp?

For me it means last time it contacted the device.

I am unsure why it shows it did for you, if the device was off. But the failed field says something was wrong.

Putting both fields next to each other will help in the future.

Well... Are you 'sure' that this is what your 'Last Contact Time' is telling you? Are you positive that the last time your BES actually 'spoke' to that users device is indicated in the 'Last Contact Time' field?

Sorry... I'm just confused as to why your BES would tell you one thing while my 'plain Jane' BES installation would tell me another...

I'm not a BES admin or know anything BES related...but from what I can gather:

'Last Contact Time' would be the last time the BES tried to contact the device. Obviously from the column next to it states 'failed forwarding', I would assume the BES was unsuccessful in contacting that device.

OK... I can buy that.

I just think that the term 'Last Contact Time' is a little misleading if what it really means is 'the last time the BES attempted' to contact a BB Device...

On exchange it does work for last contact time as far as I can tell in my experience.
