Couple of things:

When moving from BB to another, do the BBM contacts move when you 'log in' to the new BB and also with SD cards, is it only pics that are stored when moving from device to device?

BBM 5 stores them. When you switch your pin, you enter your email and they transfer. You can also just make a backup using the DTM and then restore them

BBM 5.0.0.33 has the ability to Backup via Media Card, Remotely with an email address.
I'd suggest remotely backing up with an email address, quick simple. All you need to do is load that email address on the new phone, and select remotely back up (in BBM)
Like mentioned above, you could back up via computer and DTM.
