I have a Verizon 8830 in the process of being replaced with a new Curve. I asked Verizon about switching the 8830 to a separate account which my son shares with his mother to replace his old phone which is failing. Verizon says he cannot use the 8830 without a data plan. Does that sound right? Is it not possible for the 8830 to function as a phone only?

Yes, Verizon requires a data plan for a BlackBerry on its network.

It is possible to use the 8830 (and any BlackBerry) as a phone only, but Verizon will not allow it, it is their own restriction.
