At the moment the price is only $49 (compared to AT&T after rebate price of $199).

There is NO rebate required for the Amazon price. It's worth noting that T-Mobile's 8900 also started on Amazon at $49 before eventually settling back to zero.

Amazon shows a 4 to 6 week wait - which seems to be their standard time for stuff they don't yet have in stock. This status changes quickly and their pricing on this item may also fluctuate as they take more orders. If you want one - the $49 price isn't bad.

Anyone know what the hidden gotchas are? I called ATT last night about upgrading to the 8900 and said "why should I buy straight from you when I can get it for $0.01 at Amazon?" and he gave me some line that I would now be seen by ATT as a reseller customer, not an ATT customer, so if I had any issues I would have to deal with Amazon, not ATT. Then he said that Amazon would bill me $230 as a late fee if I was late with any payment which I'm 99.9% is a bold faced lie. Their customer service has been good lately, but this jerk really had me wondering why I give them so much $...

Read the fine print, most 3rd party sellers will charge you full price if you break any terms of agreement, some of them are 6 months without altering plan, being late, changing phone to different line or replacing an existing account. That is why they can sell em for so cheap, Cuz they snag people in that fashion. If you gave a perfect payment history and are comfortable I would say go for it. If you have any doubts after reading agreement fully, don't do it.
