noticed among other private wifi's
I get connected to a linksys wifi in many parts of NYC
downtown, uptown, office in long island,
just the other day noticed it was connected in the car and i was on the LIE,
looked around nearest building had to be a good 400-500 feet away,
is linksys a NY public wifi system?
is it just a common open wifi profile?

My guess is that you just tripped across some dope who left the defaults set on their router....

linksys is the SSID and no security....
