Default Clarificaton about data

I know that in order to use BB features on the device ( browser, BB Msnger, native IM apps as well as push mail) you must have access to the RIM infrastructure.

If a provider advertises the service as unlimited e-mail, does that mean that I get unlimited usage of the browser and all other traffic that is routed through BIS? Can the provider distinguish between e-mail traffic and other traffic?

On a related note, one provider here is offering only 10 MB of data per month with a free STORM and I doubt that would be enough as I like to be logged into Gtalk all the time, have Viigo pull for updates every 2 hrs and i like to update facebook at least 2 times a day, and get on average about 40 mail messages a day without large attachments. Can some of the Canadian users that are on a limited 5MB or 10MB - can you do what I suggested above with 10mb?
Thanks

Yes, the carriers can distinguish between email and browser traffic. If it's unlimited email only then that doesn't likely cover the other data like browser, etc.

John is da man. Unlimted emails are just unlimted emails. Other apps requires data usage. Guess they have emails servers and data servers to distinguish the difference.

Thanks.

Anyone willing to take a shot at the second part of my post?

Seems like you could check your own data usage history to answer that. Another person, even using the same apps, isn't necessarily going to have the same data usage.

I cant really cause I've never had a BB data plan but only generic data. If I take the RIM's official 7:1 compression, than 10 MB of RIM data is equal to 70 MB of regular data which is not bad. But, the questions is: is it really 7:1 in reality?

Yes, this is pretty accurate. However, the number is based on plain-text e-mail without attachments.

You should be ok... when i was running with a 25mb data limit, and i was sending about 100 emails a day, BBM constantly, and viigo updating every 30 mins... i was barely hitting 10 mbs... i think you should be ok...

maybe ask to see if they will add a promotion on to your account that will give you unlimited data for at least 2 months, that way you can use your device the way you want to and then be able to see if you really are under that 10 mb limit

In most cases unlimited e-mail will also include unlimited BB messenger and e-mail attatchments.

As for the 10MB limmit you will probably stay under if you only use 50 e-mails and viigo. Just stay away from GPS(maps) and video...

Also, if you get the unlimited e-mail with no data for browsing.. if you have wifi you can use the Wifi Hotspot Browser anywhere there is wifi...
