Default why not enable GPS (battery? security?)

Please Login to Remove!

my 8330 has 2 options for GPS
"enable location" and "911 only"
it defaults to the latter.
why not "enable location" all the time? seems like I can get BBerry Maps and Google Maps to work with it.

Is there a battery power issue? how bad?
or a security issue???

thanks
/j

It's your choice you may notice your BlackBerry life decrease with it on all the time.

I'd keep it on 911 only -- there's no sense having an extra radio turned on at all times.

I doubt if you will see that much of a battery drain. Why not turn it on and see how your battery life goes.

I think security is the reason. Being able to turn it off keeps third-party apps from polling the GPS chip and phoning your location home. Which raises the question: is it possible to programmatically turn on GPS?

I use a 8320 which does not have GPS but before that I used a 7100i which did have GPS, I used a map once every day and let me tell you it does drain your battery in a short period of time, I think there is an option that only turns the GPS receiver when you access the mapping application, do a search and see what you can find

Using the map application does drain it as you are constantly downloading map data as you move. Just leaving the GPS on should be very little drain.

Yea I've left my GPS on since I found out VZW enabled, and I really enjoy it. I don't use it often but when I do I am grateful it's there.

Running BBMaps will really hit your Battery since It's constantly downloading new maps every so often (depending on zoomed in you are). Running Slacker and BBMaps at the same time good bye battery
