basically, you can't. Although there is a few workarounds,

plugging a headset in AS you take the pic, and a few others, although i dont really remember, as i don't mind it.

As I recall, the sound there is required by federal regulations to prevent ppl from taking pictures in secret. I am not 100% sure on that, but I was told that at one point. So if that is true, do not look for RIM to change it.

The app BerryAnnoying will do it, and it is even here on the webite so i doubt it is illegal.

While some part of this could be true, all the non smart phones I own, allow for changing or turning off of the shutter sound when taking pictures. All of the digital cameras I have had did as well.

What is legal for you, and what is legal for RIM are 2 different things. For example think about those tags pilows/etc that say "do not remove under penalty of law", you the customer are allowed to remove them, the store were you bought them is not. Also, it may very well be legal to create a way to bypass the click, and even to sell it, but not to use it.

Not like anyone is going to enforce this law (assuming its real), it be darned near impossible.

I would love to see this Law/Regulation people keep bringing up because I can't find it.

The only country I can find that has even considered it is Japan.

I'm 110% positive there is no criminal law in NJ for this.

I said I was not sure , but I was told it was a FCC (or was it FTC i mix them up a lot) regulation.

I am pretty sure I said in every post that I was not sure, but I will try to search for the report myself later... right now dealing with a flooded kitchen, broken dishwasher, dead cloths washer, and a host of other issues. Not a good day.

Default Taking pix when she is not looking

Just make sure the music is loud, she's liquored up and not looking back at you. Also, the lights need to be on, as the flash will be sure to clue her in to what you are doing.

I've found that nothing actually turns off the shutter sound, it just plays the sound at a lower volume through the device's "ear hole".

So whether you're on a call, using BerryAnnoying, or an earpiece, the sound will still play. So if it's a very quiet environment, it might still be audible.

Just cough when you take the picture to mask the shutter noise.

I think they do ban the silencing of camera phones, and since the Japanese produce about 99% of the devices here in the US, that feature came along for the ride. They don't have separate assembly lines for products destined for The US.

Some first Gen iPhones were shipped with the ability to mute the shutter, but that was corrected in later manufactured units.

Edit: oops I stand corrected: As of Nov. 2003...

"More likely to gain prevalence are camera phones that make some kind of noise to alert bystanders of the possibility that their photo is being taken. In November, the South Korean government ordered manufacturers to install beeping sounds of at least 65 decibels on camera phones made and sold there, after officials received a flood of complaints about camera phone-wielding peeping toms. Samsung and LG Electronics, two of Korea's largest such manufacturers, have begun to do so.

While noisy camera phones may never be mandated by law in the U.S., they're likely to make their way here since many of the country's handsets come from Asia.

Indeed, Japanese manufacturers such as NEC (nasdaq: NIPNY - news - people ) and Panasonic's Matsushita (nyse: MC - news - people ) are voluntarily offering camera phones with sounds to cut down on voyeurism and "digital shoplifting," or the illicit photography of pages in books and magazines. Those alerts range from a recorded message that says "Say cheese!" to a numerical countdown before a picture is snapped. .."
