Default Went from 8700 to 8310 (curve). Everything's better but...

The Curve seems so slow. For example, when I click to open an email there is a 1 second delay. I'm running v4.5.0.55. Is this normal for the Curve? My 8700 was more responsive, as is my wife's 8800.

I've got 4.5.0.69 on mine, and that proved to be a significant improvement over the 4.2 OS that was installed on it when I bought it. Still though, as an 8700 owner/user (I've had several), IMO, the 8700 blows the Curve away when it comes to stability and performance. Of course, the 8700 did less as well, but it did it perfectly. I'm thrilled with all that the Curve is capable of, but less than thrilled with it's track record for reliability and overall performance "feel" (I prefer the side mounted jog wheel to the trackball as well).

I know that some will rush to say how great the Curve is, and that problems are few and far between (or that they're user created), but: Do a Google search on "BlackBerry Curve re-starts", and you'll see what I mean. Media files that work flawlessly on other devices, seem to be somehow "corrupt" and potentially cause spontaneous re-starts on the Curve. The exact manner in which the MicroSD card is formatted might cause re-starts. If you use UMA on an 8320, that might cause/be part of a re-start problem. Then, there's (what seems to me) to be a much higher than normal number of trackball quirks/issues on new Curves. I'm on my second Curve, and so far, it seems OK, but it has, at times, done some odd things (on 4.2 and 4.5). There are plenty of folks that have gone through 3 or 4 to get one that's usable. So, with all this bashing, why am I still using it? Because right now, 99% of the time it works well, and it provides me with connectivity (via UMA) at work, when otherwise I'd have no signal. But, again, IMO, this phone will never be the stable workhorse that the 8700 was (still is).

But, anyway, yes. As far as I'm concerned, the performance is slow when compared to the 8700.

Wirelessly posted (8310; Category 5)

What apps do you have running in the background? And as always, a battery pull reboot might help.

Without any applications running I have 13MB free after a battery pull. Databases take up 2.5MB and I the 3rd party apps I have are Google maps and Worldmate.

The other thing I mean about being slow is that sometimes the trackball is unresponsive. I will move it around but it doesn't respond for several seconds.

uhhh...the 8700 also has restart problems...ive had mine 2 yrs and its my biggest complaint. happens about once a month. cleared the device, tried a few different OS versions and nothing ever changed it. there is a thread on here somewhere about it.

debating on upgrade to the curve or 8800 (stay on vzw) right now...

I certainly can't argue with your experience, since obviously, it happened to you. OTOH, I can't recall any of my 8700's ever doing the spontaneous restart thing. The plethora of Curve restart threads aren't about once/month restarts. Most of them are continual restarts, restarting 8 times a day, etc. In principle, I'm not knocking the Curve, because it truly has everything I need on phone. But in practice, I really feel like RIM's got issues at the hardware level with this phone, and as users, we just have to hope we aren't bitten by them.

I just went from an 8700 to the 8310 as well (I've had my curve for just over a week).. I do have to say the 8700 was more responsive and quicker than the Curve, but then again it didn't do as much. My 8700 always gave me issues when I tried running Opera Mini, the Curve I haven't had any problems.

I upgraded from 4.2 to 4.5 the next day and it seems to be running a bit faster.

I did have the restart problem as well on the 8700, but out of the 3 years I've had it, it only happened to me twice.

I really miss the scroll wheel though, the trackball takes some time to get used to.

All in all I still I like my curve.

I use a curve, but the 8700g will always have a special place in my heart. You could play hockey with that thing and it wouldn't stop. I think it seemed more "stout".

Absolutely. It was the cell phone equivalent of the old Ma Bell black bakelite desk phone.

That is true.. I've dropped my 8700 so many times there's dents everywhere. My last drop was in the rain into a little puddle of water on the sidewalk, still works fine to this day!

I've been told the Curve's not as durable. So I just bought 2 cases and screen protectors in case I end up dropping the thing in the future
