It's not so much that it pauses your data connection, but if there is a brief break in your data connection a voice call can, under certain conditions, come through. It's not 100% reliable.
CDMA-- including 1xRTT-- can do this too, but the data timeout is generally a lot longer (about 10 seconds on most networks).
Regardless, the OP was asking if it's possible to use both the voice and data networks simultaneously (ie, browse the web while talking on the phone). The only thing you should be able to do, on some networks, is send and receive SMS while on a call, unless your handset is set to send SMS via GPRS.
