Default Area code when dialing only 7 digits?

Please Login to Remove!

Is there a way to automatically force an area code to be entered when dialing using only 7 digits?

My province just switched to 10 digit dialing and I already have my phonebook stored with the area code but get many SMS and emailed phone numbers sent without the area code.

If I try to dial them from the menu I would like it to just force "403" in front of it. Is this possible? Otherwise, I have to enter the full number manually (and using cut and paste isn't much easier)

Follow the instructions here:
My Caller ID name/number do not show when I get a call or SMS - BlackBerryFAQ

Check the FAQ for lots of good basic info.

Thanks, but not quite what I'm getting at.

My receptionist sends me my messages via some sort of network SMS gateway and the "from" field is always blank. So inside the SMS is something along the lines of "Call Frank at 555-5555" and while I am viewing that message I can just highlight it and press send or use the menu to dial it.

I also have my voicemails transcrived and emailed to me and same thing, if the caller doesn't leave an area code then I cannot dial from the message. Obviously, as people get more used to 10 digit dialing then they'll learn to leave the area code but for now, I am left having to manually enter and change the number each time one comes in.

So, Jeff, what do you entered for the Smart Dialing settings as prescribed in the link?

Country Code +1
Area Code 403
National Number Length 10 (but have also tried it with 11)
Use "1" for National Dialing Yes

Honestly, that is how it works (for me, with my carrier) and it should for you, unless Telus has some odd setting. Mine will default to dial my local area code where there is not one entered, i.e., my 205 is defaulted if I dial 123-456.

I had a feeling that it should do that - perhaps theres another setting that I'm missing somewhere.

When you dial 7 digits, do you see the area code added when you hit send? Do you see it in your call logs?

No, the 205 does not appear in my call logs when I dial just the seven digits. Again, there could be a difference in standard between ATT and Telus, but I know at some point recent I had to make sure the AC was set in my Smart Dialing, as my seven digit numbers were not dialing.

Wirelessly posted (8830)

Thanks for answering - perhaps they just don't have that set up yet so I get tortured by the grace period warning message.
