I turned off the "dial from screen" option so that I can use the keyboard shortcuts. Now I do not seem to be able to use the "voice dial" option. Is there any way to do both, i.e. use the keyboard shortcuts and still have voice dial

Yes, you can still use voice dial with homescreen dial off.

I don't understand the connection, but before anything, do a battery pull reboot and try again.

how exactly are you calling the voice dial function? are you using the left side convenience key, bluetooth or wired headsets?

yup, that's what i thought; only convenience keys can do that (note for the OP)
