Default Pager Options and the Blackberry

Please Login to Remove!

So I'm looking to drop my pager and just carry my blackberry. However I do not want to give out my cell # to everyone in the hospital, and many services prefer to leave numeric pages rather than voicemail

So what I'm looking for is a service that includes:
  • Dedicated Pager number
  • Receive numeric (or alphanumeric) pages
  • deliver to my blackberry via email or sms

any ideas or thoughts?

You could sign up for a Grand Central account and set it to send all calls to voicemail and set up the voicemail saying something like, "this is a paging service, please don't leave a message."

Then set the GC service to notify you via SMS or email of new voicemails.

Hey Bones,

I am in the same position as you and I am ditching the pager for Grand Central. I give patients/people my grand central number and I have it automatically forward to my cell phone. They don't get my cell phone number. When my cell phone rings with 'Grand Central' on the ID, I know it's a patient. I can answer it, listen in on the voicemail, or let it go to voicemail.

I also have it set to SMS me when a voicemail is received and I can look listen to the voicemail on the computer or call my Grand Central number to receive it.

I ditched my pager. The way I see it, my ringtone is alot less annoying than a pager so if you can get past the 'beeping required' mentality, I would go that route. And it's free.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Ya I had a grand central account setup for that, but was hoping there was a way to add numeric paging to GC?

Otherwise the service is freaking sweet

One thing that I cannot get the fire department to move away from are text pagers. The plain and simple fact in Fairfax County, Virginia is that despite Nextel HQ being in our jurisdiction, the coverage stinks and that is what a majority of the department uses.

I am still holding out for a service that automatically transfers a text-page into a SMS, since I am no longer under the Nextel curse.

It's amazing that something as old in technology as the one way text pager has much better coverage than any cell phone I have ever had.

Thats true and it would get me anywhere. Here in my area my department still has text pagers as well. We all carry Blackberrys but they still want us to carry the alpha pager
