Default ATT 8310 with Tmobile service?

Please Login to Remove!

I currently have T-Mobile service and would like to know if I could use an unlocked 8310 from AT&T. Would the GPS only work with Google maps?
Any drawbacks in using a phone from a different carrier?
Thanks

Dave,
I am using my BB Pearl with T-Moble and have the Blackberry data plan.
Thanks

Yes, I am using an unlocked 8300 Curve on T-Mobile, can't see why the 8310 wouldn't work just the same.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I just recently switched to the 8310 from my Pearl. I have T-Mobile as well. I can't get my GPS to work in 3rd party programs like google maps or infospace findit. It works when I refresh my GPS it advanced options but not in a mapping program. This is my first GPS phone. Am I suppose to set it up somehow or is it suppose to work right away in these programs? Any help is appreciated.

it should work with no issue at all. i had 8800 before att unlocked on tmo network, used gps with google maps and also blackberry maps. both works just like it should. as long as the phone is able to get on the internet, everything should work just fine. make sure you are on the 19.99 for your bis plan on tmo, not the 9.99 email only plan.

for the 9.99 tmo disable internet browsing provisioning, aka no internet browsing at all, none of the app will work, except you will get emails.

GPS is unrelated to the carrier and will work just fine on T-Mobile. The 8310 will work exactly the same on any GSM carrier.

Hmm does this mean there is something wrong with my 8310? I can refresh the gps in advanced options and get a location, so it seems to be working as it should. I just cannot get it to work in 3rd party apps. I don't want to use telenav.

EDIT: I deleted the google services (mail, map, news, search) and downloaded google maps from the main gmaps mobile site (Google Maps) and now the gps for that google maps works. YAY! Still no gps in InfoSpace Find it, but at least I have it in google maps now. I saw the little blue dot moving indicating my location.

The GPS feature has absolutely nothing to do with the carrier. As long as there is a data plan the software can use to get its info, it should just work.

Don't even waste your time getting your phone insured through T-mobile. You have to pay $5 or so a month, and if anything happens, they quote you a really high deductible. My SK II 2 years ago was about 80 after shipping and deductible, and now I hear the deductibles are even higher ($100+ range). Just take good care of your phone with a nice case and a good holster if you're prone to dropping things out of your pocket.

My understanding is that as long as you personally purchased the phone from the correct dealer (ie: Buy an AT&T phone from an AT&T store, then unlock) you can still get your phone taken care of under the RIM warranty for one year. T-Mobile will also help with getting you set up and running, no problems.

I agree with the other poster, don't bother with TMO's insurance, it only covers their own branded phones and AT&T won't cover you unless you have the phone attached to an AT&T plan with their insurance. Also, deductibles are high as well as the price. You can get a standard personal property insurance plan against all perils with just about any mutual insurance company - check with your home insurance company. They have low deductibles and can be had for much cheaper than the one through the cell company. Only difficult part is that you have to maintain the policy yourself (ie: pay separate bill, handle claim forms, etc.)

I just got a new 8310 red from ATT, called and had it unlocked, and put in my Tmo sim and viola, everything worked. GPS also worked on BBmap as well as Live Search.

Can't wait for 4.3!
