I notice when placing zip codes into the native contact book, the zip code field does not default to numbers as it does with the phone field.
Is this something international?

Yes. Outside of the US, many postal zone codes contain letters.

A postal code for Aberdeen, Scotland is AB10 1UL

Yes, some (Canadian, for one) have alphanumeric postal codes. For example, their codes will contain an alpha character indicating the province (M = Toronto).

It is too bad it cant infer from the city and state fields which type of zip code to expect.

Within the capabilities of the device and what it has to work with, it can't do everything. Priorities are set. There are limits. One day it will, I'm sure..... Or the otherway around: you enter part of name and another piece of info (phone or zip) and the application fills in the rest of the home address and phone info, or something like that.
