Is there a way on the Verizon Curve to make Outlook mail appear as "read" on the phone if it's been read on the desktop, and vice versa?

Yes, get a BES and an Exchange Server, and enable Wireless Email Reconciliation.

that's really the only way? we don't have an exchange server here at work and I don't know what a BES is. Sorry, only went from a Q to a BB a couple days ago......

Depends on the mail server. Your mail client (Outlook) isn't really relevant. Outlook supports a number of mail protocols. Reconciliation is possible with some of them and not possible with others.

IIRC integrating your account via OWA with BIS might enable the type of reconciliation that you're looking for.
