Wirelessly posted (8100 on T-Mo: BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I wandered into starbucks this morning and connected with UMA and no login screen came up at all. I turned off "mobile network" and am now just connected with UMA. The internet conection is very fast and I just made a few calls. Pretty cool I will be stoked if it connects and allows me to make calls this easy from a wi fi connection in New Zealand.

Thanks for any help.

Sadly not, for us poor brits nothing so advanced will work, according to t-mobile when I called them.
It must be because our GSM signal coverage is that great we dont need it
Hmm, coverage round my way is poor! I could really benifit from it.

Ahh, I know whats going to happen, RIM will be releasing a SIP client any day now, all my problems will be solved

Cant you tell its Friday!

So long.

This delivers high-performance, low-cost mobile voice, data and IMS services to subscribers over the broadband Wi-Fi access networks, dramatically increasing mobile service usage and decreases the costs for operators. Forgive me for not understanding! All I can make of this is if im using UMA im not getting charged? Or do I have to add the talk forever plan and then I don't get charged? My phone will hook up to a place and it wont show UMA but I can still get on the net its just hooked up WIFI?

You've asked the same question several times and I've given you the same answer. I'm not sure how else to explain this. It's not that complicated.

If your phone displays UMA then you can make phone calls using UMA. The minutes you use will be deducted from your rate plan the same as when using EDGE. There is no extra charge for UMA. If you add the Talk Forever plan then your minutes will not be deducted from your normal rate plan, thus giving you unlimited minutes over UMA.

If you have Wifi connected and it's bold (you have to hava a data plan for it to go bold) but does not display UMA (happens sometimes at hotels, etc. where you can't control the wifi network you're connected to) then your phone calls will use EDGE and your data will use the wifi. There is no extra charge for getting the data over your wifi.

I don't know how else to explain this for you.

PLease excuse me for the many times I asked the question! I guess what I was looking for is what is the purpose of UMA? Is it just for the talk forever plan? How does it benefit having a UMA phone and not just WIFI? The only reason I wanted WIFI was to be able to use the net when I wanted to and not have to add the BB data plan

You can use the wifi to browse the net with no data plan. However, you can't get email or use any BB specific apps without a data plan.

UMA is an added feature with the wifi. If you don't use it, so be it.

Yep. This question is quickly moving up to the status of the "how do I turn off the camera noise" question.

Uncalled for. There's no need for that. Your question has been answered several times here yet you still want to ask it.

The purpose is to make phone calls. I'm not sure how much easier it could be to explain.

If you have a different question or the answer you are getting to your question is not what you were looking for perhaps you could re-word your question?

I apologize for the rude comment! Yes it has been answered! As it was posted above the original question was worded wrong! When I purchased the curve I knew nothing of the UMA feature. First place I went was the BB faq and it said coming soon! I dont use the phone for calls that much and the WIFI feature to get on the net once and a while! Was wanting to know how UMA could benefit me! And this has been addressed! Thanks

is this true or you dont need the talk forever plan to do this?

The H@H plan is not necessary to make the UMA calls back to the US. Without the H@H plan the minutes will just come out of your normal minute plan. With H@H you can have unlimited minutes.

Hi everyone...New to the blackberry world but this site has been soooo helpful in making the transition from a windows based phone.

Sorry for sounding like a total noob but I have a question about UMA. Im using the 8320 here in Canada on Rogers. Rogers doesn't offer UMA up here but I will be going to Europe within the next month or so. My question is - if i find a UMA offering hotspot, could I take advantage of that and call back to Canada via wifi?

No, your carrier has to offer the UMA service.

I have to travel overseas extensively and the UMA works great for calling back to the USA. One added bonus I've noticed is that all the calls I receive from the USA, when I'm on UMA, are not charged for.... I've only received a little over a couple hundred since November but so far so good. I'm talking about international long distance rates, they are coming out of my bucket of minutes. I would recommend carrying a small portable wifi device when traveling as most hotels have ethernet in the rooms.
