Default If suretype is so good, why doesn't the Curve have it?

My friend with a Pearl says he can out type me on my Curve, thanks to SureType. This makes me wonder if I should get a Pearl. But if SureType were that good, wouldn't they have offered it on the Curve?

I'm just wondering if it wouldn't be possible to SureType on a full QWERTY? Or am I confusing SureType with Predictive?

suretype is a type of predictive text, think of it as a much more advanced T9. I wouldnt be suprised if in the future the qwerty models had word completion though, where it will give a list of words based on what you are typing.

well there is t9 on a alphanumeric keyboard where typing the number (associated with 3-4 numbers) and then the next number for the next letter etcc would make the program try to figure it out and making your words.

There is the same for suretype bb model where there are 2 letters per key.

Curve has all independant key so suretype-t9 aint needed.

I wonder if there a way to enable t9 via an 3rd party app where you could have t9 on your numbers key but that would be stupid=/

suretype is *not* T9. it is much more advanced than T9 with word completion, dictionary size, etc. it was designed based on T9 but it isnt the same.

I haven't heard of predictive text on any Qwerty devices yet. Predictive was added to the SureType in 4.3 but hasn't made it's way to the Qwerty devices. I'd be surprised if they added it at all.

suretype is cool, im way faster with it than i am with a qwerty (depending how long the text/e-mail), less surface area to roam. don't think qwerty devices will need suretype since each button has their own except symbols/abreviations and numbers. all qwerty needs is spell check which it already has.

Suretype is only put on the smaller Blackberrys that are too small for a full keyboard. Suretype is by no means better than a full QWERTY keyboarded device. Tell you friend to buzz off!

It's a matter of personal preference, which is why RIM offers the option of either. I've used both Qwerty and SureType, and although I slightly prefer Qwerty, I wouldn't let the presence of SureType stop me from getting a phone if it had all the other features I wanted.

See this post. QWERTY with intelligent use of auto-text is far faster than SureType and predictive text; I'd bet money on it. But the key is taking the time to set up auto-text. I deleted RIM's default entries and currently have 350 of my own. I can type like the wind on my Curve.

I have used both and prefer suretype to a full qwerty now. I will only buy sure type devices from now on.

Agreed. Spending a little time to go through and optimize the auto-text entries can dramatically speed up typing. For my personal needs I've had to delete or change some of RIM's defaults (like LD to insert the date ... I type LD several times daily meaning Long Distance).

It's not "so good" any more than one color is any better than another -- it's entirely subjective. Some people type faster with SureType. Some type faster with full qwerty (autotext or not). Whatever works for you is what's best.
