I'm very keen on auto-text. A lot of people use it just for typos and abbreviations of long words or expressions. It's good for these things, but if you think about it, most of your text entry consists of the same short and medium-length words over and over. If you create abbreviations for these words, even though you may only save a few keystrokes per word, in the course of a few paragraphs in an email it adds up.

With predictive text, if I start typing "int..." it's going to offer me a lot of words. Even "inter..." will give me a bunch, and I can either scroll and pick one or type more letters. "Interes..." will give me a choice among "interest", "interests", "interesting", and "interested" but I've already typed quite a bit. Using auto-text, I have

int=interest
ints=interests
intd=interested
intg=interesting

No scrolling with the trackball and selecting. Full speed ahead.

I have about three hundred of them. When I first started doing this, I was adding new ones all the time. Now I seldom do. Give it a try and you'll be surprised at how much faster you go.
