Default Disable phone feature using BES server?

Please Login to Remove!

I have not yet gotten much into device management and IT policies yet, but the demand for this at my organization is now here.

Does anyone know if there is a way for me to disable the phone feature on a specific device through the BES server? I searched and couldn't find a thread related.

Thanks in advance!

Rob

It's done through IT policy on the server. You assign that policy to whichever device you want to disable the phone one.

For those who don't want cell service on their BB's at my company, I call my cell carrier to cancel cell phone service to the unit (saving $ on the monthly bill) and then add them to the policy group.

I created a new Policy group (called NO PHONE) which mirrors all the settings in my "default" group, except that I disabled the phone feature. The phone icon still sits on their BB but it is not active. The unit still has an active cell phone on it (in order to make emergency calls), but by using this policy it stops the users from making calls on the device. With the cell phone service cancelled, if they use the phone anyway, it would accrue large costs per minute from the cell carrier. Make sense?

This is the problem. I am not yet very familiar with policies yet. I have no idea where to start with them or how to make and deploy them. Are there any resources that I could go over and self learn creating, editing, and deploying policies?

Don't modify the default policy, just create a new one (standard user/test user/admin/etc..) and test them on yourself.

Look at the Administration Guide. It has an entire section on them. The policy you are looking for is called 'Allow Phone' which needs to be set to FALSE.

When I create this policy and only change the allow phone attribute, everything else will stay the same, correct?

The only thing that should change is the Allow Phone Calls Policy on that has been set to FALSE..

I'm learning that the policies being set do not always do what they're supposed to. I have enabled a policy then ended up changing the setting to what the default would be had it been unchecked, and it didn't back out the initial setting after policy was pushed down. Unchecking the policy seems to resolve that, though.

I have also noticed this with our BES, but it usually does apply to some users and other users can still use the features that were disabled;
