Default Stolen Blackberry, how long to wait before you ....

Please Login to Remove!

Hey Guys,

How long should i wait before i provison a new SIM card for the guy that had his Blackberry stolen?

I have sent a Wipe Handheld comand to the device.

Because once i provison a new SIM card for him, wont that deactivate his old SIM and if the Wipe Handheld comand hadnt got to his phone yet, it might never will?

Does that make sense?

Cheers guys

I would provision the new SIM straight away because when only do a wipe HH it just deletes the information on the HH so the phone is still able to make calls.

When you provision it with the Telco, they will lock the SIM so it doesn't make any calls etc.
Regarding Emails going to the HH, when you wipe it, on the BES server it will say NO PIN.

I think what he's asking is if the old sim is deactivated and the wipe handheld command hasn't gotten to the phone yet, that it will never get there. The device will still have the data on it.

Well funnily enough, I currently have the same problem as a phone was stolen on the weekend.

What i do is call our Telco and get them to deactivate the sim until a new one comes out.

I've sent a wipehand held but that won't work as according to the Bes server, the last time the HH was contacted was on Sunday 3am (monday 11am currently) so the information will still be on the phone though it does have a password on it but i'm not sure how "strong" that is

I don't think there is a way to delete the information off the phone if there is no sim in it as it obviously won't be able to communicate with the HH?

Does RIM provide a banning of the PIN? so it can't be re-used?

Correct, if the command hasn't gotten to the device it most certainly won't get there now.

You can call up T-Support and indicate that a device has been stolen ... also make sure your carrier knows too.

On the upside, the kill command never times out. So if it just ran out of power in the battery and someone charges it, and assuming it can still receive data, then the kill will hit the handheld shortly after the radio is turned on. If it is turned on.

Hi Guys thanks for all the response's!

The "Kill Handheld Command" is great, but seems like it will only work with a Active SIM card in it

Was wondering if there was a way to tell that the Wipe has worked, OR how long i should wait before i de-activate the SIM.

Bit of a win-loose situation here isnt it?

It's been a while since I checked, but I think the IT Policy log will have a line stating that the command was received on the handheld.

Once it gets received, there is nothing that can stop it from processing the wipe.

Pitty.

Basically you want this line "Message has been delivered to device" followed by the Tag of the the Sent information. If you don't have it

Yeah i did a search for KILL_DEVICE_REQUEST in the logs and came up with ziltch.

Might do a test with myself and watch it all in action.

Good to know that its in the logs for next time!

Well if you came up with nothing then it wasn't the day you issued the command.

I'm not sure about any resend period, I just know it doesn't expire.

Hey,

I just sent a kill request to my blackberry then, within about 10 seconds it started to wipe.

Checked the logs for KILL_DEVICE_REQUEST and it came up with nothing.

I wonder if i am checking the right logs? (BESLogs)

You need to start stapling devices to your users' hands!

I stupidly made a mistake on a device - I had 3 users, all with an identical name, named eg, john smith.

so they were jsmith1, jsmith2, jsmith3.

I knew it wasnt Jsmith1, he already had a BB.

I couldnt get hold of the user, so asked the guys who ordered the device, and they told me it was man number 2.

So i configured the device, and passed it onto the user eventually. He tells me its not him - he is number 3!

So, he will drop it off to me, but in the meantime, I figure to stop him reading the other guys emails, i will change the password. I sent a password change request.

Then, i figure, why not kill the handheld, i will have to wipe it anyway.

so kill it.

I get the device 2 days later, and surprised to see that the device is switched on, full signal, GPRS signal, but the password is the same as what I set it as when activating, and it obviously hasnt been killed!!

A bit worrying!
