I am not sure if I understand the process or not. I know that when I use the BB Browser, it is subject to using the same web browsing security policies that the BlackBerry Server is subject to. However, when you use an alternative browser, like the alternate browser packaged with the BB or a third party application like OperaMini (which by the way is really cool for end users... I liiiiike) the same policies no longer apply.

Case in point, Websense is safely able to block and filter when a Blackberry Browser is pointed at a blocked website (MySpace). When OperaMini is pointed at MySpace, it is allowed to navigate and retrieve information from this site.

At first guess, I would say that OperaMini is getting it's web navigation information from the phone service (T-Mobile) and circumventing our network completely, however I could be wrong. Anyone have any input on this?

That's correct.
Using BES IT Policies, you can disable the use of third-party browsers and force all web traffic to use the MDS Browser should you need to.

Ah I see, is it at all possible to setup 3rd party browsers to use MDS? I would imagine its only possible if the 3rd party apps support MDS and therefore OperaMini and other 3rd party browsers should probably be disallowed on a secure network.

I believe the opera browser data goes through opera's servers for compression and formatting.

Even if the data is prepped prior to hitting the BlackBerry if it goes through the MDS service it should hit my BlackBerry server at some point at which point deep inspection of packets in and out of that server should still be able to filter. I am going to look at Opera's website and see if they have a solution.

You can't force a third-party browser to use MDS.
