Default Server Migration

Please Login to Remove!

I'm a bes admin in the process of migrating users from our old bes to our new one. Here is the current setup:

Old server: 154 users, BES 3.6.7.12
New server: 179 users, BES 4.1.2.20

I've been migrating users and, subsequently smaller licenses, without issue. It's now getting to point where we are going to run out of smaller licenses on the old BES and be left with a 100 user and a 50 user license. This is going to make migrating without buying more licenses impossible.

Is there a way to move the 50 or 100 user license and keep it on both temporarily? Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Try calling RIM Support and explain your situation and ask for a 30 days temp CAL.

I know this is technically not allowed, but you can run the CALS concurrently and it continues working - I've seen this done before. Whether you are infringing the license is another matter. As you are migrating to a new box, I'm sure RIM would help here

Thanks for both the tips. I will call RIM today and see what they recommend.

Indeed it is against the licensing agreement, but it does work.

Got a weird case were one Rim tech would help me with a Trial SRP to migrate my 4.0 to 4.1.. (loved this idea since it was possible to move user by little batch and to leave the 4.0 box untouch and with no downtime!).. Then i call back for another issue.. And another tech tells me that it's not possible (legally) to use a trial SRP to migrate to a new server.. We have to buy a migration kit... That if something goes wrong we are not supported. So it's gonna be a knife-edge upgrade with downtime.. too bad. First solution was to simple it seems.

This is good to hear. I just got off the phone with RIM and they wouldn't provide me with a trial key (and he tried to sell me a migration kit). I asked him about running a license on two servers simultaneously and he said it should work, but he won't guarentee it.

So, just to be sure. If I add the 100 user to the new bes while it is till on the old one, both servers will function fine? I could even move smaller 10 and 20 user licenses back to the 3.6 server so that I could remove the 100. Essentially, I just need some leeway.

Thanks again.

In general yes ... I've seen licenses for 4.1 not work properly with older versions of BESMgmt databases, but you're going the other way, so it should work ... but at the same time keep your environment unsupported from a licensing perspective (just need to be clear on that).
