Red face Why did you get a GPS Puck? / How often do you use it?

Please Login to Remove!

Good Evening,

Long story short, I am thinking about getting a Holux M1200 puck. Currently when I'm lost I use Google Maps, without GPS, which efficiently gets me to my intended target. Albeit, a GPS would get me to my destination safer (reading text directions while driving) and quicker.

Just curious on how beneficial a GPS puck has been to you and your reason for getting one. Thanks.

Brgrds,

I have the Freedom Mini GPS puck. Small, convenient, and hangs on my keychain. I use TeleNav when I'm out of town looking for my hotel and a dinner solution. I've been quite happy with it. I use Google maps for the great search feature and for when I don't really need voice prompts but want to see where I'm at.

I have a Holux GPSlim240 for my 8830 because I got tired of waiting for VZW to enable GPS. I subscribe to Telenav and use it all the time. It's been a tremendous help in finding services and mapping out courses for travel. I also use Google Maps, Yahoo GO, and Beyond411's GPS features.

If VZW ever does enable the internal GPS, I'll have to decide whether I should then sell the Holux and use the internal. A lot depends on how good VZW's implementation of VZ Navigator is for Blackberry. Right now, Telenav blows away VZN's service on a standard cell phone, but no one has yet spoken of the BB version and what features it will have.

I just got my 1200, why? I guess you can say I love geeky things and just had to have it!

I tried google maps without the GPS, now with the puck, I am able to have my start location done by the GPS. A lot faster than typing.

I am also using nav4all.com for the GPS. It is free and uses voice to guide you.

Draw back of nav4all....it yells at you when you are going to fast...LOL!

I also own a Holux GPSlim240 that I pair with my 8300 Curve which doesn't have built in GPS. I got it to use with Telenav and it has been very useful with the voice prompts and street names.

As a BT puck, I haven't had any issues.

I use a GlobalSat BT-338 with my 7130e and MS Live search and it works great. It pinpoints my location on their maps and you can just ask for directions to an address and follow the track.

The only drawback is no voice instructions and you have to scroll the maps as you go. The same thing will work with Google Maps but i like the maps better on MS Live search.

Best thing is it's free!

I have an old Holux GR 231 and it works for me and my Pearl. However, I think the GPSlim 240 is better though.

I am using it more or less frequently when I am on a trip or somewhere to track my movement.

I have a Garmin Nuvi for general navigation when out of town. I find myself using the 8300 and GPS Puck with Google Maps or 411, to find local points of interest (food, shopping, businesses etc). I think it just does a better job and is more up to date. That and I'm a GPS freak. My wife swears I'd put GPS on the lawn mower....

Anyone have a tip on where to get the best deal on a Freedom Mini GPS puck? I did a search here and didn't see anyone selling one. A google search tells me it appears they go for about $88...is this correct? Thanks!

Is there any monthly fee to use the puck?
If I were to put in a desired destination, would it show me how to get there from where I am?

No monthly fee, but it does use your data connection, so it might cost depending on your plan

Yes, it's a GPS!

Thank you for the very direct and clear reply.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Now I am going to look into buying a puck for my Blackberry 8100. Any suggestions? I see people use Holux or whatever that is...

If anyone wants a GlobalSat BT-338 PM me, I have one that I used to use with my treo but no longer need it since my 8830 has built in GPS. The only thing its missing is the rubber cover that covers the charger hole. I have the car and A/C wall charger. PM me an offer... If its good its yours.

As with all BB GPS solutions, there's no fee for using your GPS receiver -- it just uses signals from the GPS satellites. However, your GPS app may or may not have a fee and likely requires that you have a Blackberry data plan for maps.

This summer, I walked around downtown Chicago. My BT GPS puck couldn't get a fix, probably blocked by all the tall buildings, I don't know.

Even so, just by comparing cross streets and scrolling about BBMaps and GoogleMaps, I knew where I was and where I wanted to go.

I kind of wanted to use my tracking software to plot my walk. Alas, it was no big deal.

To answer the original poster's question: I got mine, an iTrek M6, just for fun. I even used it to check my speedometer accuracy on my motorcycle (it was off just as I suspected).

Otherwise, no real need for it. I haven't been so lost that I couldn't just scroll around the map(s) manually to match my current location for PoI searches.

I will say driving into Chicago was certainly easier and less stressful with it running.

Steve
