Default Nextel Activation - taking too long?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi. I'm a long-time reader and first time poster.

I've been researching the blackberry for a while, as I orginally wanted a Sidekick II for it's web browsing and AIM. However, I'm a long-time Nextel customer, and with a contract that ends in the future, I cannot simply afford to drop nextel to switch to T-Mo.

So I've come to the blackberry. I finally had enough to purchase one today. While the phone itself is impressive, the people at the nextel store i bought it from today had trouble activating the phone, and transferring my number from my i860 to the BB. They called nextel care and they told them they're experiencing "backlog problems" and therefore cound not instanteously transfer the number as they've done in the past. They told me it would take around 24 hours for the transfer to take place.

So I'm wondering, has anyone experienced something like this with flip-flopping to a BB? How long will have to wait until I receive full data performance and such?

Thanks in Advance

-Josh

As a dealer I can say yes, backlogging is common and can take up to 24 hours for the number to take effect. As for the data end it may take 48 hours seeing that you got 24 to wait for your number. 24 hours is usually the norm for you to be provisioned for data. Sit back, drink a cold one and just wait, ur wait will be well worth it.

Cool

I had the same problem when I got my first BB. However, I contacted Blackberry Web Support (866-265-8305) and they were able to switch the number for me. I was able to start receiving all my calls, but it did take a few hours for the SIM card to populate the number. I'm not sure where you're at, but I would try the number above. I call them first with anything related to my BB, before I call Customer Service. 9 out of 10 times they resolve it on the first call. Hope it helps.

Thanks for your repsonses guys.

I called Nextel support this morning, and they told me since I did not purchase the phone at a Nextel store, I would have to call the store I purchased it from because they have to complete the order.

Finally after playing phone tag for a couple of hours they finally got back to me and were able to finish the flip flop from my i860 to my BB.

However, none of the internet was working, so I called Blackberry support and they found out the store never completed the BB registration. They got the rest of my info and magically all my online icons appeared. I was up and running, surfing and talking on AIM.

I must say, this device is alot better than I expected. Web surfing is faster than my friends' SKII's - and Ramble AIM is pretty good as well. The reception on this thing is AMAZING, I was able to chat on AIM while sitting in the basement of my job - my motos (i90,i730, i860) would scream "no service" the min I step onto the stairs. All in all the wait was worth it.

Thanks alot, and I plan to post here often

I didnt experience those problems when I activated my BB 7520. I called nextel 20 minutes after Fedex delivered my blackberry and my number was active while I was on the phone with them. my data however took another 20-30 minutes to become active....I was actually driving to work and my phone started going nuts with emails and stuff...im glad you got your problems solved and thanks to the person that posted the number for blackberry support I will start calling them before customer service because CS doesnt know anything about blackberry's

You have to do it manually.

Either typing it back into the phone itself, or typing it up in Outlook and then syncing with your blackberry. (How I did it)

Or you can use Nextel's MyAddressBook feature, which stores your contacts on a Nextel server, so you could pull it off your blackberry browser. But I am not sure if this is an extra charge per month.
