Generally SMS and SMS plans are domestic only, however AT&T does have an international SMS plan for a couple of $$'s and it gives you a small allowance of messages per billing cycle. This info is carrier specific.

On our corporate plan international texts are $0.15 and domestic text (U.S.) are $0.10. So we seem to be charged different rates.

I guess someone had to glue the continents together, and they want to get paid, you know? Tin-can-and-string isn't free.

seeing that you are on AT&T, you will be charged for each SMS/MMS message sent internationally, whether it's to Canada or to Australia . . . over at Nextel, they're still treating all SMS/MMS the same, so if you have a messaging plan with Nextel, international msgs sent are counted towards your allowance or bucket of msgs. . .

If it were me, and I was concerned about springing added costs on a phone bill I don't pay for, I'd probably check with AT&T instead of well-intentioned people on this board. But that's just me.

As has already been mentioned, domestic and international SMS are billed at different rates on at&t. Unless you have an international SMS package you can count on getting billed per SMS to Australia.

Consider yourself lucky because if you were my kid the phone would be gone for a while.

As the others have said, if you are going to use the phone in that way and you are not paying for it, look up what charges are before making the call or text. Prove to them you are responsible and go to them with suggestions on how to cut down on the bill. They will appreciate your efforts.
