I added a couple apps

Not sure. I may be off here. But worth checking. Do you have a saved email that is unread? (Go to message folder, open menu, select View Saved Messages.)

I have the same problem.
In your email program, click on the menu options with the BB button, and click on Mark Prior Read. That should get rid of it. (btw, when clicking on the options, make sure that the cursor is not on an email, but on, say, a date, otherwise you won't see that option).
Weird problem, that.

So you were getting the unread message icon even though all messages in all folders were marked read? Interesting, if so. I haven't seen that yet, personally. But good to know and file away in brain for future reference.

You guys are awesome! Thank you! It didn't work in MMS/SMS or email but it did fix it by doing that in the "messages" folder.

Strange. It not only didn't get rid of mine, but damn well deleted ALL my prior emails! Now I have NO messages at all in ANY of my folders, but I STILl see a 1 unread indicator. I know if I do a battery pull, it will clear! It doesn't happen all the time, but it's irritating that it happens at all!

I think you did a 'Delete Prior' Bruce, rather than 'Mark Prior Opened' (delete Prior is right under Mark Prior Opened on the menu)......

Actually, I tried "mark prior opened" first, and it didn't help. When that didn't help, I tried the delete prior and then wham!
That's what proves to me there's something strange. I have NO messages at all, read or unread, but it still says I have an unread! Wierd.

Bruce, did you do a "mark prior opened" in all the folders? make sure you do it in saved messages, phone call logs, and missed calls as well as the main messages folder.
Watch out for the "delete prior." That's a drag....

Do you have another icon for SMS messages? Perhaps it's an SMS message that's unread?

Hmm. The ONE thing I didn't try is the Phone log. I checked everything in everything else, but that call log, I didnt think about. Next time it rears it's ugly head, I'll give it a try.
And I did try all the things (except the OS reload) in the FAQ. I know the battery pull works, it's just irritating having to do that on a brand new phone!
The strange thing I get every so often is on the heading "messages", I get a "1 Unread" but no envelope Icon. It's like it just doesn't quite clear out. If I ignore taht, the next email/pin/sms message I get, after reading it, it will reset it all and it's gone away. That I can live with, but that rogue envelope that shows up every so often, that's irritating to me and it DOESN'T reset like the "1 Unread" phrase does.
I'll try checking the phone log next time that thing shows it's ugly head! Thanks everyone!

Hello All,
I have experienced this from time to time. In fact, so infrequently that I forget the solution, and struggle for a bit to remember it.
In my case, I have two email addresses that I use, and the BB address is hidden. From time to time, an email comes to the BB address. I'm not sure how this happens, as I don't send from it.
Anyway, the solution for me is to unhide the folders, go to the BB email account, and delete the message that has come to that address.
Works every time...if I can remeber that is!
Cheers.

Good suggestion DG.
Now if you can remember you posted that solution here, you can come back here to find out how to do it when you forget how to do it.

JSanders,
Any thoughts on how the message might arrive at that 3rd address?
In other words, I send an email from account #1, but the reply comes to account #3.
Thanks.

What is your default email address to send from? Options > Advanced > Messages. Which address is showing, that is the default send from address for all addresses UNLESS:
If you send from one address in the past, the BB will default send from that one again for that contact (i.e., it remembers what address you sent from in the past and uses that one again.
Could something like that have happened?

JSanders,
I bet that's it. Perhaps by mistake, or when I first got the 8300, I used address #3. Or, the recipient has #3 in her system from a prior message, and depeding on how she contacted me (new email versus reply), it came up with #3. Hmm. I'll have to contact her via phone and explore with a little test.
