Question Setting up 2nd BES in Enviroment

Please Login to Remove!

Can I have two seperate BES's setup with standalone DB's, seperate SRP's, and Licenese keys connecting to the same exchange server?

Any caveat's I should be aware of?

Our current setup:

1 - BES 4.1.4 for Exchange with BESMGMT on local box running Sql Express 2005

New BES will be a VM on an ESX cluster, same configuration as above.

Exchange Server 2003 SP2

I'm not trying to setup redundancy but rather just setup another one to place a demo user account on and do some tests. If my tests go fine then I'm going to rollback and reinstall BES with the same info as the current production BES and perform a knife edge cutover of the database.

Thanks for your time.

Yes you can.

By rollback, you'll rollback the ESX image and not just uninstall BES, right?

I was planning on rolling back to before the BES installation. I have a snapshot created right now after all the pre req's are done.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 9000: BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Can you get another copy of BESX (with a new SRP and one CAL) for free just like you got the first one? Will RIM do that?

It's something I may be interested in, in order to get another BES email account onto my BB.

The BB can't be on more than one BES. But to answer the question, I believe that RIM will give you one copy of BESX (1 cal included) per PIN.

Ladydi is correct. I spoke to a local RIM rep and since we do not have a T-Support contract they would not give me a link to download the 4.1.3 or 4.1.4 full installation packages. He recommended that I just sign up for besx and download the 4.1.4 installer from there. When installing I was told NOT to use the CAL provided but rather use one of our existing BES server available CAL's and it'll convert it to a full blown BES.

There are many people who have done this. As long as you re-name the service (and therefore the service books) to something other than "Desktop" you can put more than one BES account on there. You can only do a PIN once per BES, though.

You re-name the email account from "Desktop" (default) to something else. I already have mine named "Exchange". This way you can have service books for both accounts, because when you activate on the second BES it's going to put service books for "Desktop" on the BB. It won't work if you already have service books with that name.

Sure, but how do you actually rename the email account?

On the BlackBerry smartphone or on the BES .....?

What happens regarding IT policy in a setup like this? Can you perform wireless PIM functions when setup on two BES's? Are the BES's connected to different email servers or the same ones? Wouldn't you get duplicate items?

The only place I've seen to do this is in Desktop Manager, under your email settings.

I'm not sure about IT Policy; I was wondering that myself. It probably will just generate an error. I don't think you can do PIM functions on both BESs, but you probably don't need to anyway (at least I can't see why really). You wouldn't get duplicate email items because it's two different email accounts. I'm trying it with the same email server but it's two different accounts with different names.
