It lost the physical "click" feel when scrolling downwards and doesn't respond to any downward movement of the trackball. It responds normally to left, up, and right inputs. Any idea what's wrong or how to fix this? It was acting up yesterday intermintently but stopped working altogether this morning (for the down movement).
I would take your trackball apart and clean it.
I did a search on clean trackball and pulled up several previous threads including this post...

If you look at it, disassembly is real easy. And if you mark the trackball where I indicate, putting it back together should be a breeze.
As you can see below there is not much to the entire device.
I cleaned up the below pic. You don't want to see what it looked like.
What the hell, here is what the trackball looked like before I edited it. The horror, the horror......
If something really large got in there you may need to disassemble. BUT i am sure the following will work. Try depressing the ball and while keeping it depressed roll the ball several different directions. You may need to do it a few times but I am guessing it will function again normally on one of the tries.
No, there is no need to disassemble the entire phone, the trackball pops out. Below is a link to another thread that shows how to change the color of the trackball on the 8100, but it also shows how to take the trackball out and the process is the same for the 8800 series.
bmwmpower, is there a LED on the 8800 trackball similar to the 8100? I read somewhere that the 88xx only use 1 LED for both keyboard and trackball.
When you opened and cleaned up your trackball did you see this one LED?

Thanks.
yes there is a light for the track ball. If you follow the instructions listed for the pearl trackball removal, there is only one LED. Yuo can't miss it.
