Question Junk mail filter on BIS ?

Please Login to Remove!

I have an 8800 and am on BIS 2.3

I have my own POP server and forward all email to my blackberry email address while leaving it on the POP server for my desktop client to fetch later on.

Many message do not get through to my bb. Mostly junk email so I don't care, but there are 2 people whose email never arrives on the blackberry - I do see them on my desktop client. I've asked them to send test messages and they never show up on the BB

There is no filtering done on the pop server. All incoming email gets forwarded.

Is there some sort of filtering done by the BIS server? I get very little junk mail on my BB while I get a lot on my desktop client.

BIS do not do junk mail filtering. It just gets whatever it in the Inbox. Check your BIS filters and any mail rules you might have in the POP3 account.

Nope. You can manually try to filter spam but it's an exercise in futility, IMO. It's best to get some upstream spam filtering if possible. My BES hosting provider uses MXlogic and their spam filtering is really, really good. Not sure if they offer a personal option though... We had to adjust our MX records to have MXlogic set up as our mail handler.

Junk mail is not coming in to my blackberry either. This started a few days ago. I have my mail forwarded to my blackberry address. When I get back to my computer, there are several SPAM messages that never got delivered to the blackberry. There are messages before and after the SPAM came in that all got delivered to the device. Very Strange. I hope it's not skipping other messages too.

My hosting provider filters spam pretty well (I'm using BIS), but for some reason, some still get through but the subject line is prepended with '[SPAM]'. So, I just use the filter feature in my BIS login and block anything with that in the subject line. It seems to work well. I still get the email in my outlook on my desktop computer, but not on my BB.

I also do this with automated messages from myspace and forum sites that don't have a corresponding WAP site (unlike this fine site ). While this isn't junk mail, I don't care if someone has posted something in a forum when I can't read it on my BB.

Oh, it also fixes that little gmail problem too

Default BIS Spam mail

I have added a filter to "catch" certain words in "Re" but to no avail. I use a semicolon between 2 words, no space.
Am I doing something wrong?
Please let me know
Thanks

My wife has noticed the spam filtering recently with mail forwarded to her @vzw.blackberry.net account. I haven't noticed because I forward my mail through gmail instead. Check out this article from Nov 2006 that talks about spam filtering on BIS for @rogers.blackberry.net.

EXCLUSIVE: Rogers Wireless employee details increased BlackBerry email anti-spam measures coming Saturday - BBHub

"In response to the increased amount of SPAM e-mail that has been showing up in the Inbox @rogers.blackberry.net) of BlackBerry Internet Service customers, RIM will be implementing additional improvements to the BIS anti-spam filters to reduce, but not eliminate, the number of unwanted and unsolicited e-mails starting on December 2, 2006," the letter reads. "Also, RIM will be implementing additional enhancements to BIS in upcoming releases to further reduce the amount of SPAM messages."

RIM apparently has the capability to filter spam on BIS. Perhaps the other carriers or RIM decided to turn this on for everyone after Rogers tested it out live for 7 months.

There must be some form of filtering on the BIS by RIM

I've checked with my POP provider and they do not do any filtering on the POP server unless I specifically turn on the SPAM filer, which I have not - I checked.

All the POP server is set to do is forward mail to my BIS 2.3 email address, but keep the message for me to be able to retrieve later with my Outlook client.

There is some mail which is not getting through. Mostly spam, so it's good, but there are 2 friends whose emails never come through to the BB. Not one message, ever.

So it's got to be RIM. I've changed providers recently, from Proximus to BASE in Belgium and the issue is the same.
