Default Replacing 8800 glass screen

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,
I have an 8800 for Cingular - I cracked the glass screen a bit last week. I am pretty sure the LCD is perfect - it is just the glass on top.

I found this site on ebay that sells original OEM 8800 screens
eBay: GENUINE BlackBerry 8800 8830 LCD Screen LENS Glass B0y (item 160134092514 end time Jul-07-07 22:40:42 PDT)

Question is: Has anyone had experience in replacing the screen on their own ? How easy is it ? What tools do I need ?

thanks

Hi all, i have the replacement 8800 glass screen and it came along with a 3M adhesive paper. But I have no idea how to use this paper or take out my old screen. Are there any instructions anyone can provide ?

Thanks Schmidt2k8, I did take a look there -but it seems like a full disassembly guide - I am looking at only how to take the front screen out without taking the rest off.

Looking at the guide (and others I have seen floating around), this pretty much is the only way to go. Disassembly seems to go from back of the unit to front.

Looks like you'd only need to go through step 5 to replace the fron half of the case though.

I purchased the 8830 replacement but it did not come with the 3M adhesive paper. Where did you purchase the screen that comes with the paper.

FYI, I took the leap and replaced the glass screen. It was very simple. No dissassembly required. I used a 'key card' (you know, the stuff that Giant, CVS etc give us to attach to our key chains) to pry the old screen open. It is simple, start with one corner, slide the key card in a bit and then slide the card around all edges of the screen (once the card is in). The glass screen comes out - there is adhesive on the sides and two clips on the top. I then replaced the old screen with the new and snapped it back into place.

I did not end up using the new adhesive paper for two reasons:
a) There was sufficient adhesive already on the phone corners and the clips on top add more support.
b) The adhesive paper that this ebay person sent me was sized exactly for the screen but it covered the full screen. When I took out the old screen, the adhesive was only on the edges, not on the screen, so I did not use the new one (I'd hate a creased screen)

If I see the adhesive coming out in the next few months, I'll just put a bit of glue around the edges later.
