Yes!
You can use the Rogers 10meg data plan for BlackBerry, but you CANNOT use BlackBerry-branded applications (they just simply don't even work). So no email.
WORKS:
- Opera Mini 4 Web Browser for BlackBerry (from Opera)
- IM+ Chat with MSN, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, Google Talk (from ShapeServices)
DOES NOT WORK:
- BlackBerry Email
- BlackBerry Browser
My partner is using the cheap non-BlackBerry data plan on a BlackBerry. The text messaging and PDA features are wonderful and makes it worth having BlackBerry on a non-BlackBerry plan considering that the next step up from the 10MB non-blackberry plan ($10) is the 25MB BlackBerry plan ($60).
Yes, it's crazy to go from $10 to $60 just for 250% as much data.
Rogers is overpriced. (At least they got a wonderful GSM network -- excellent reception nearly everywhere I go -- a lot like Verizon in the USA)
IM+ is excellent at being data-miserly. Occasional use (3 to 4 times a week) used up only 400 kilobytes of data a month. This is less than I expected, considering I heard anecdotes that IM+ uses about 200 kilobytes per hour of heavy chatting...
BlackBerries still make excellent PDA / texting / chatting machines even without a BlackBerry plan...
