Read my mind.

Can the video converting instructions / application from 8100 / Pearl be used on the 8300 / Curve?

With the release of the 8300 came the Media Manager from Roxio in Desktop Manager. This app will convert and place nonencrypted video directly on to the BB.

The "new" software is not nearly as effective or useful as it declares to be. It's limited in it's formats and some formats it says it converst, but they still don't play. I think we're looking for alternatives.

Default Mplayer works great for me

I use mplayer under Linux. You can download it for Windows too (mplayerhq.hu). It is a command line app and works great for me. I have encoded some videos and played them on the Curve.

Here is the command I use:

mencoder -vf scale=320:240 <input file> -o <output file> -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=230:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64

Works great every time.

Geez guys, just go to the stickie at the top of the 8800 forum on Videos. There's dozens of how-to's posted there, as well as a link for you Windows users to the Seabyrd video conversion program. Explains bitrates, etc. The 8800 media player conversion how-to is the same for my Curve, I'm using the same videos between the two. Other than the 8300 being able to play at full screen with 320x240, there is no difference in media formats supported, etc.

I'm sure there are many ways to do it but for me, Media Studio from Makaymaka is the simplest and fastest way to do it. It rips the commercial DVD, converts it to a supported format (.3gp) and finally moves it to the Curve. No manual ripping, no manual converting and no manual copying to the Blackberry, it just does it all.

You start Media Studio, put in a DVD, select the quality and language and click the Action button and it does it all.

In my opinion, well worth the $35.

Really? It rips commercial DVDs and removes the DSS copy protection? It sounds to good to be true to do everything in "one step".

Greetings
