Please Login to Remove!

Hi Guys...

I just installed telenav yesterday, and its a GREAT GPS program. But its eating my battery life. I couldn't find any options to turn off GPS while not in use. Anyone know?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't believe GPS or Telenav run in the background if you have the application closed. Telenav always has to restart and reestablish my location each time I use it. When it is actively in use on my screen, yes, it eats up battery like crazy. I've resorted to using a car power adaptor when using it for trips longer than 30 minutes. But once I close it up battery life goes back to normal. Do you have any other programs that may be running in the background?

An active bluetooth connection will definitely eat up your battery life. If I run Telenav for 4hrs straight with my screen always on.....I have to recharge.
But hey.....how does the 8800 gps work with Telenav? Is it via bluetooth? Sorry guy....I just noticed it was an 8800.

confused about your question

the 8800 has built in GPS and telenav is a program on the blackberry. why would bluetooth come into play?

You can download and install TeleNav on the 8800 - has nothing to do with Bluetooth as the GPS is built in to the 8800.

How you can turn it off is to ensure you fully exit the TeleNav application. You can hold down the "ALT" key then click on the "Backspace" key (next to the phone end key) to see what applications are open in case you accidentally left it open.

Default I recommend MapQuest Navigator for Blackberry

I use both Google Maps and MapQuest Navigator on my 8800. They both run extremely well. For MapQuest Navigator there is no install for the 8800 specifically but I installed the version designed for an 8700 series on Sprint (think that was the one I picked).. anyway it works great on the 8800.

Both of these mapping apps work extremely well. I prefer the GoogleMaps interface but MapQuest Navigator supports and makes use of the internal GPS in the 8800!!! Both of these apps will run in background mode (or seem to) and I have seen very little power drain (the issue you are raising).

The major thing is these are FREE applications with NO monthly fees. Why pay a monthly fee for maps when you can have maps for free that support the GPS? I have found MapQuest Navigator to be almost as good as any dedicated GPS I have used in the past. I expect that Google Maps will soon release a version that supports the internal 8800 GPS as well.

What option do you have it on? Always on display - it's better to use the on turns display option.

Thanks for this info I just downoaded MapQuest Navigator and it actually works better than TeleNav which alsways seems to have issues unless I'm standing outside. Or I find myself constantly resetting my 8800 in order to get it to work.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Mapquest is not free. It is 30 free trial.

Because Google Maps doesn't currently support GPS on the BB.

As for Mapquest, I've found that it's not as quick at realizing that I've missed a turn nor is it as quick at rerouting as Telenav. Mapquest also tries to recommend u-turns in places where it isn't possible. I also prefer Telenav's ability to announce street names (where available). While those points matter to me, YMMV...

Even with the Always On option my battery life isn't affected when I exit Telenav (unlike the OP).
