rmichell, how did you go about setting up the DVR to transfer your shows? I would love to be able to use this feature.

My DVR has a built in ethernet card. In the setup I just store the path to a shared folder on my home computer. Then I can just check mark any recording I want to copy over and choose a send-to-PC option and they all transfer to the shared network folder as mpeg2 files. Then I use mencoder to reduce the files down for the blackberry. I use an LG LRM-519 dvr.

Don't get all crazy.
"This is because the Courts, legislature and the Studios recognize personal use copying as a form of civil disobedience and such is generally considered acceptable behavior. In a sense everyone knows everyone does it and as long as people don't try selling copies of DVDs on eBay or run a Grokster type site, the status quo will be tolerated."
Don't get all crazy. I do not think you are going to be sued sharing a few files between a few BB users. The excerpt above is proof they only want people making money selling the stuff. They don't have time to bust sanfran if he decided to share for free <--keyword
Of course that's not to say he is not correct. If you make a big deal of it and share at full T1 speeds to millions of users you might get busted! :(

It really can be reduced down to one simple fact: if you call attention to yourself by your copying and sharing activity or if someone wants to "get you," then you will get busted.
Yes, this person called attention to himself:
Fox subpoenas YouTube over pirated '24' - U.S. Business - MSNBC.com
Here in San Francisco there was a police search of a house that caught fire. The police were there because the firemen saw marijuana growing. During the search they found DVDs that were obviously copies of movies. They mentioned in the news that the police added federal copyright crimes to the list.
And I'm not saying it can happen on BBF like it did on another forum, but what if a forum member is in law enforcement. You end up angering him or her for whatever reason. What if in retaliation that person then decides to contact the appropriate enforcement agency to report your "not a big deal to you" copying and sharing activities and you get busted [Sidenote: did you know that the biggest source for tops to the IRS about tax evasion crimes are pissed off spouses, ex-business partners, competition and angered "friends" and NOT through investigation. Recall Barry Bonds troubles where his ex-girlfriend reported him. So it can happen.]
Well enough gloom and doom. This is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable place. You don't need my grim reaper posts.
Go back to copying your DVDs. But don't be publicly sharing them.

ya your right, Ixxx8217;m going to lock myself down in my 11' by 15' room because who knows what I might do that's potentially against the law. Not to mention all the cops I piss off along the way. Best to shut myself down so I don't go to prison. Oh wait, maybe that puts me in my own prison because I'm afraid of my own shadow. Shrug.

That's one way to look at it, but my posts address a very specific Member inquiry, is copying DVDs legal. So "who knows what I might do that's potentially against the law" is not applicable since I'm just discussing what can happen in terms of illegally sharing/copying DVDs.
To be sure, most people do whatever they do because they 1) do not expect to get caught; 2) act on the basis that nothing will happen to them if they do get caught; and 3) can always plead ignorance of the law or that the law is not fair
Considering the FBI warning on each and every DVD that is played I don't see how there could be a question that copying and sharing DVDs are activities "potentially against the law."
But I agree, as my posts say, that the odds of getting busted for discreetly sharing files between friends are slim to none. To be sure, the only individuals getting busted on eBay are those putting up copyrighted works for sale, even on small sales. And on YouTube, the Studios and Artists are only going after those who post fresh material or works that are sold elsewhere on the Net or in stores.
To be safe, I would not post on BBF the sharing or exchange of DVD movies. I think anything on YouTube is cool, but not full-length feature films converted for the Pearl.

I suppose I'm missing the entire point of watching a movie or video on my Pearl's massive 240x260 super-hi-def screen...not to mention the 7.1 channel "make you jump out of your seat" theater quality audio.
Someone care to fill me in? ;)

For me watching videos in circumstances where I have time to kill or otherwise want to relax is the main purpose of "videos on the Pearl."
For example, last week I was on the train for a 2.5 hour trip. Part of the time I whipped out the Pearl and watched a movie, with headset on.
Another time I was in line at the post office. Was about a 20 minute wait, which went much faster when watching a Seinfeld episode.
I don't consider the Pearl a substitute for my home theater setup.

I can't imagine that anyone would consider it a substitute for a home theater system, I was just taking it to an extreme to inject some humor
I guess in my case I just don't think it's worth the effort to recode and load a video on my handheld, because my laptop travels with me literally everywhere I go (ok, so sometimes it stays in the trunk of my car, but I'm sure you know what I mean). While it's not as easy to whip out in line at the post office...although, that's some humor in and of itself...I'd rather use that on a train ride

Yeah, in the "old days" I used to use a laptop for viewing movies during travels.
Then I got some of those portable DVD players.
From there went to PDAs that allowed me to play movies anytime, anywhere.
Now the Pearl is a dream come true because it's uber portable.
Alas, the corniest use of my new found movie portability is when I stayed overnight at a girl's house and I said "we can watch a movie on my new phone." So there we were in the sack with headsets on watching a movie.
To here credit, she tolerated my geekness, but she has never asked to see a movie on my Pearl since that night.

I get your meaning. In your case, it probably wouldn't make much sense to put movies on your Pearl.
I spend 2 hours a day on a commuter bus, and do not usually have my laptop with me, so... I keep a few games, some music, eBooks, and a few movies on my Pearl; and I swap out the movies once a week or so.
Very handy for diverting my attention from the guy loudly SNORING in the seat next to me.
